Longitudinal Submerged Arc Welding (LSAW)

Longitudinal Submerged Arc Welding (LSAW)

Longitudinal Submerged Arc Welding is the type of welding basically used for pipe  which manufactured with weld. This  is a specific welding technique used in pipe production. Production from longitudinal submerged arc welding is required high high wall thickness due to high internal and external pressure. The longitudinal Submerged Arc Welding is popular welding process used for longitudinal seam welding of large diameter pipes . This process also called as LSAW.

The longitudinal Submerged Arc Welding find their application in Oil lines, gas lines, water supply etc.

Steel pipes is long and hollow tubes used basically to transfer product from one location to other. The transportation of product from one location to another by with help of pipes which pipes mainly consisting two types, one is seamless pipes and othe welded pipes. During manufacturing of both of the pipes steel cast into more workable from hot billet or slab . By stretching the hot billet into a seamless pipes . For transporting large quantities of hydrocarbons over long distances, longitudinal submerged arc welded (LSAW) pipes have been used for decades.

When we required high wall thickness due to high internal or external pressure  the most economical process is The longitudinal Submerged Arc Welding (LSAW).

The ERW (Electric Resistance Welding) differ from LSAW (The longitudinal Submerged Arc Welding) is that the LSAW type used for large diameter size of pipe as compared to ERW process. The LSAW type process used for pipe having diameter 16 inch. To 60 inch, low temperature resistance. Also Double Submerged Arc Welded (DSAW) steel pipe is available in straight and spiral welded formats and used in a variety of applications

The material used for LSAW type process is heavy or middle thickness sheet which coiled in forming machine and welded by The longitudinal Submerged Arc Welding.

In the longitudinal Submerged Arc Welding. Hot rolled coils used to formed the steel pipes by bending and welding process.

The typical example of production of longitudinal welded large diameter pipes as shown below,

Firstly Longitudinal edges of steel plates beveled using carbide milling equipment , after that beveled plates formed into U-Shaped press subsequence into  o Shape using O-Shaped press the whole process shown below,

The inspection purpose in LSAW Welding is to check Chemical analysis, Flattening Test Bending Test X-Ray testing, Yield Strength, Ultimate Tensile Test, Hydrostatic Test etc.

Specification :  ASME B16.25 covers the preparation of butt weld connections between pipes and ASME B16.49 covers the marking details.

Advantages :  contamination of impurities in the air is protected by this type of process.

welds would penetrate 100% of the pipe wall and formed very string bond this is main advantage of LSAW process.
