WELD JOINTS & POSITIONS (overview)

               WELD JOINTS & POSITIONS (overview)

In fabrication area and site area there are large numbers of different types of welds used with various joints.

Some of basic weld types as below,

  1. Butt Joint.
  2. Edge Joint.
  3. Lap Joint.
  4. T – Joint.

               Butt weld :
Butt Joint prefer where the two metal pisses joint in a same plane this type of weld required proper preparation of weld and penetration during welding.
The common weld joint shown below,

  1. Square Joint.
  2. Closed square Joint.
  3. Single bevel Joint.
  4. Double bevel Joint.
  5. Single 'J' Joint.
  6. Double 'J' joint.
  7. Single 'V' Joint.
  8. Double 'V' Joint.
  9.  T Joint.

The symbolic representation of symbols shown below,

Before starting the welding, the type of                   joint  configuration plays major role, the joint            preparation by following different methods,
  1. Oxyacetylene Cutting.
  2. Machining.
  3. Grinding.
  4. Plasma Cutting.
  5. Stamping.

The joint configuration of weld which depends on the material, weld,  Thickness etc. Communication from the weld engineer to the welder is essential to proper completion of weld. The differed of weld joint is mentioned by appropriate symbols, Each joint of weld have specific weld symbol which shown in engineering drawing on the basis of this the welding is done.

In above picture the arrow direction is  on the weld t joint if the fillet symbol is below the reference line indicates that the weld is located where the arrow point.

In above picture the arrow direction is on the weld of T joint, if the fillet symbol is above the reference line indicates that the weld is located
on the opposite side of joint.

  • WELDING POSITIONS

For welder it is important to know proper knowledge of welding positions. The ASME define the position of welding as,

  1. Flat.
  2. Horizontal.
  3. Vertical.
  4. Overhead.

Different factors affected by  welding position  so practice is required for welder to produce perfect welding in all position.

If we discuss about design  consideration this factor plays major role in welding, following factors must be considered during design consideration,

  1. Used Material.
  2. Physical and mechanical properties of weld  and HAZ (Heat Affected Zone).
  3. Weld access
  4. Service Conditions.

Lots of parameters and factors affected on the weld joints, so the weld joints important during the process of  plays major role in manufacturing.
